ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP
Sheriff's Deputy Jason M. Baker made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on September 17, 2001, protecting our community. Only a few days earlier Jason had shared his thoughts with students in a classroom on the world-changing events of September 11, 2001. Jason said, "have faith, support the government at the local level, be vigilant, pray for national leaders, reflect on what happens us as a nation, and say thanks to public safety, fire and police personnel."

Jason's life and words will be forever memorialized at the "Heroes of Public Safety" Memorial and through the annual Jason M. Baker Public Safety Scholarship Run at historic Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana. Inspired by the love of a father and by the respect of fellow public safety officers, a grateful and caring community comes together this September and every September hereafter to honor fallen heroes and to thank those who serve in public safety - locally, statewide and nationally.

Jason M. Baker dedicated his life to service, community and country. Jason's father, Jerry Baker, a law enforcement officer since 1971, worked in collaboration with the Central Indiana Community Foundation to establish "The Jason M. Baker Scholarship Fund." High school seniors intending to pursue a course of study in preparation for a career in public safety at an Indiana university or college are eligible to apply for scholarship assistance. Mr. Baker chairs the scholarship selection committee.

BENEFITS
Proceeds from race entry fees, sale of race t-shirts and donations will go to "The Jason M. Baker Scholarship Fund." Your support of this event is a great way to celebrate the lives of our public safety officers and to THANK them for their brave and unselfish service.

ABOUT CROWN HILL CEMETERY
Founded in 1863, Crown Hill Cemetery is Indiana's largest cemetery and the third largest non-government cemetery in the nation with over 190,000 burials. Thousands of visitors tour Crown Hill each year to enjoy the peaceful beauty of the grounds, study the exquisite architecture of the buildings (Gothic Chapel, 1875), sculpture, historic Gothic gate (1885), and to visit the burial sites of Indiana's most notable citizens. Crown Hill is the final resting place of President Benjamin Harrison, poet James Whitcomb Riley, Col. Eli Lilly, 3 U.S. Vice Presidents, 11 Indiana governors, and numerous other political, business, and cultural leaders, as well as the many heroes we honor with this race and with the Heroes of Public Safety Memorial dedicated in September 2002.

New in 2004 is the "Field of Valor," Crown Hill's newest veteran's section and mausoleum, to be dedicated on Veteran's Day (November 11). Also featured are a Photo Contest that runs through the end of the year and a modern sculpture exhibit featuring Indiana artists.

With over 555 acres and 25 miles of paved roads, Crown Hill welcomes runners, walkers, and cyclists year round. Gates open daily at 8:00a.m. and close at 6:00p.m. through September. (Closing time from October through March is 5:00p.m.) With its park-like setting featuring rolling hills and various types of wildlife, Crown Hill is an urban oasis that offers a peaceful place to exercise, picnic, or to study the history and heritage of the thousands of people buried there. Please visit the cemetery's web site for a complete list of tours and events or call the Special Events Information Line at (317) 920-2726.
